I also learned an interesting tidbit from Philip Rosedale, the founder of Second Life and Linden Labs. Second Life is a 3D community where people can interact with others in a virtual world, which looks amazing. When signing up, users are offered various surnames to use on Second Life - the original was the surname Linden (as in the parent company, Linden Lab). I asked Philip what was the significance of Linden and it turns out his first office was next to a leather corset shop on Linden Alley, so they just decided to name the company after their location. They are now in the vibrant Levi Plaza area of San Francisco. Linden Alley not only had an impact on the company name, but Philip's avatar boasts leather chaps (which he designed in the early days and was too busy to change later), which are now iconic to his online personality.
