Surreal Neil, Super Diamond and Game Show Explosion

Friday night we went into SF to meet up with our friend/colleague Mark de la Vina to see the closing of SF SketchFest, a comedic series featuring several well-known comics at Cobb's Comedy Club.  To my surprise, Super Diamond - a Neil Diamond tribute band - was playing one block away at Bimbos.  I've never seen Super Diamond, but the band was mentioned in David Wild's book "He is... I said" about Neil Diamond (Neil was so impressed with the band, he even went onstage at the House of Blues in LA and joined in), so I've been curious to check them out.  Dominic ran down to get tickets, but discovered the concert was sold out - drats.

Meanwhile, at Cobb's, we settled into our seats to see "Game Show Explosion" - a spoof on the old "Match Game" where contestants are plucked from the audience to go head-to-head with a panel of celebs to match answers to bizarre questions. Friday’s lineup featured host Jimmy Pardo with Emmy-winner Jon Hamm (Mad Men’s Don Draper), Mary Lynn Rajskub (CTU analyst Chloe O’Brien on FOX’s 24), Bob Odenkirk (Mr. Show with Bob and David), Paul F. Tompkins (host of VH1’s Best Week Ever), Pat Francis (Never Not Funny) and Scott Aukerman (Mr. Show).

The show was great and as we were saying our goodbyes, we decided to venture over to Bimbo's one more time to see if we could find some tickets.  Dominic asked the doorman and suddenly a guy appeared out of nowhere offering us two tickets to the concert.  Sold!  We were in and it was incredible.  Surreal Neil sounds exactly like Neil Diamond and the band was tight and hot.  I am now a huge fan of Super Diamond and will be happy to see them again.  Even if you're not a Neil Diamond fan (I can't understand why... but anyway), you should check out Super Diamond for a great evening of slick showmanship, flawless singing, and rockin' riffs.

By the way, if you want to follow Neil Diamond on Twitter, I just found him at @NeilDiamond.
